With sadness I have found the news of Don's death. He was my most important voice teacher for a number of years circa 1961. He sent me to my first paying church job with high references and I am forever grateful. Don is responsible for the singing I do even to this day. For all that, my first memory of Don is as Scarpia and I will always treasure it. Warm regards to the family and friends.

I and my family got to know Don through ancestry and were very proud of our family connection. We had the pleasure of meeting Don and Kaye here in England on his many tours and also stayed with them at their lovely home. Don was such a Gentleman and had such a wonderful voice and will be so sadly missed. RIP Don.

Dear Kaye and family,

My brother and I are so sorry to hear of Don's passing. We fondly remember him singing and rehearsing with our grandfather at the house on Harrison avenue in Northampton, and of course love his beautiful recordings of Duke songs and many others. He was a great friend to my grandparents, a great artist, and a wonderful, lovely man.

I imagine there is a joyful reunion and more beautiful music to be played and heard as they meet in the hereafter ...

Blessings to you and yours,

Morgan Vaughan and Nathan Hood, children of Kay Duke Sturges, and grandchildren of John Woods Duke

I was saddened to learn of Don's passing. It has been many decades since I took voice lessons from him when he lived in the Washington, D.C. area, and I remember him fondly.
None who may read this know me but my thoughts are with you at this sad time and it may comfort you to know that stranger to you that I may be, my thoughts are with you.

Dear Barbara and Laura - your Dad's life was truly extraordinary! Not sure how one person could possibly accomplish all that he did. Evidently, he brought much beauty and joy through his music to millions of people throughout the world. We are deeply sorry for your family's loss. Please find comfort through the words of your friends and remember that his music will be in your hearts and will live on forever.

Barb,

I am so happy that you were able to be with your dad.
It does not make your loss any easier, but I am sure it was a comfort to him that you were with him.
What an accomplished and talented man. His continued contributions and sharing of his talents are an example for all of us.

My thoughts are with you and your family.

Dearest Kay. I didn't Donald very well. Attended occasional functions at ClarkU. I unfortunately never had the pleasure of hearing him perform. He was always the perfect gentleman. Very measured, supportive and nurturing. I could sense that that sweet exterior housed an even sweeter soul. I am so so sorry for your (our) loss. May sweet memories somehow ease the pain. Deepest sympathy. Joey D'Angelo

Dear Kaye, Barbara, and all those here who so deeply loved and regarded Don... I post this more personal note here because I had planned on visiting Don after my return from Colorado, this coming week of his Memorial service. I would have then had the opportunity to thank him for his inspiration, his faith in me, his song, his universal love for music, the love he showed while singing, and especially thank him for lending his gift to my own music. I am forever touched by his beautiful spirit. And I know, to some lesser degree, the loss you must each and all feel. A handsome, tall, spirited, generous, lovely angel has left us but his singing and lovely spirit lives in our hearts always. Always.

In 1970 I had the extreme pleasure of directing Don as Emile deBecque in a production of SOUTH PACIFIC opposite the late Jean Anne Kain at the Colony 7 Dinner Theatre in Maryland. It was a wonderful experience. We caught up many years later on Facebook. He was an incredibly charming man and a beautiful soul. His voice was quite sensational!

I remember him as such a lovely man. A real gentleman. He stayed at my house a few years ago with Anup when they were touring around England. It was a pleasure to meet him. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Kay

Marty and I send our sincere sympathy to you in the loss of your dear husband. WE played tennis with you on Sundays a few years ago Kay, and came to Clark Univ. to hear your husband sing in a concert. We thoroughly enjoyed his beautiful voice.
May he rest in peace and our thoughts are with you Kay.
Sincerely
