Phyllis Worden Obituary

Ware - Phyllis A. (Hueneke) Worden, 95, of Ware died on Saturday, July 27, 2019 with family by her side. She was born in Revere, the daughter of the late John A. and Ann (Crompton) Hueneke. Proud of her Boston roots, Phyllis came to Mary Lane Hospital as part of her Licenced Practical Nurse training, intending to return to Boston until her nursing supervisor and future mother-in-law introduced her soon to be husband, Thomas H. Worden, Jr.  Phyllis worked at Mary Lane Hospital for almost 40 years, where she especially cherished her years spent in the newborn nursery. After retiring in 1989, Phyllis taught for several years at Trinity Church Christan Nursery School, which she co-founded and where, to her delight, many of her young pupils (or their parents) were those she had cared for in the hospital nursery.

Phyllis loved her home, enjoyed needlepoint, reading and walking on the beach.  As a lover of nature, a drive through Quabbin was also a favorite, where she would recall happy times spent blueberry picking and family picnics in Hank’s Meadow.  She enjoyed feeding the birds (and an occasional bear) and was involved in many community activities.  Most of all, Phyllis loved her family and being a grandmother.  Fiercely independent, Phyllis, who never drove a car, could often be seen walking from one end of town to the next to do errands or to visit friends. She was the first to offer a welcome or a helping hand to those in need. Phyllis always made room at the table for one more, no matter the occasion. She was a member of Trinity Church, Ware;  over the years serving on the Vestry, Altar Guild, various committees and was a Sunday school teacher.  Phyllis was also a member of  the Star of Eden Lodge.

She leaves her five children; Ralph Worden and his wife Kathleen of Ware; William Worden and his wife Peggy Loomis of Portland, ME; MaryAlice Worden of South Grafton; Bruce Worden and his wife Lori Hoffman of Hardwick; Donald Worden and his wife Jennifer of Bolton; as well as seven grandchildren, her twin brother, Phillip Hueneke of St. Augustine, FL and many nieces and nephews.  She is predeceased by her husband Thomas H. Worden, Jr., son, James L. Worden and siblings, Robert, Ruth, Thomas and Dorothea.
