Brimfield - Ann E. (Southworth) Manning, 80, a long-time resident of Brimfield, died on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus in Worcester from complications of recently diagnosed lymphoma. She passed peacefully with her family by her side.
Born in Ware, Ann was the daughter of the late Constant "Bud" and Agnes (Mulvaney) Southworth.
She leaves her daughter, Dana Manning of Sturbridge; her granddaughters, Michaela Salviuolo of Sturbridge, Kendra Salviuolo of Sturbridge; her niece, Amy Southworth of Paxton; her nephews, Christian Southworth, his wife Jennifer and daughter Kayla of Brimfield; Jeremy Southworth and his wife Kelly of Auburn; her cousins, Jane and Mary Ellen Barbiasz of Brookline, Pam Twyble of Sarasota, Gretchen Fornof of Girard, PA, Donny Cranz of Linwood, NJ, Bill, Richard and Greg Southworth all formerly of Ware and many, many friends. She also leaves her ex-husband Gene Manning of West Palm Beach, FL, whom she remained very close to throughout the years. She was predeceased by her brother, Bernard Southworth.
Ann graduated from Ware High school in 1962 and went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts Degree in English with a minor in Education from Albertus Magnus College, New Haven, CT in 1966. She worked as an English teacher at Tantasqua Regional Junior High School for 32 years before retiring in 2001.
Ann was a voracious reader and a walking Strunk & White. She would correct any improper use of grammar that crossed her eyes or ears. Ann loved music of all genres and attended hundreds of concerts in her lifetime. Her favorite band was The Rolling Stones, and she did not miss a Stones concert within a hundred miles since they started re-touring in 1981. Ann loved watching the Red Sox on TV with her dad, and would attend games each season with her close friends or granddaughters. Ann was known for being quite stylish, her outfits always featured lots of rings, big necklaces, keys that jangled at her waist and a signature pair of high heels. She was a cat person to her core, and she would often joke that, "No outfit is complete without cat hair." Shopping, politics, big hair, black coffee, peppermint stick ice cream and the scent of patchouly also brought her joy.
A calling hour for Ann will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2024 from 9:30 to 10:30am in the Charbonneau Funeral Home, 30 Pleasant St., in Ware followed by burial in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Ware.
