Carl R. Varnum, Jr., 74
North Brookfield/Worcester - Carl R. Varnum, Jr., 74, died Wednesday, February 3, 2016 in the Worcester Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.
He leaves his two brothers, Alan Varnum and his wife Carol of West Brookfield and Wesley Varnum of Brookfield; four nephews, Marc Varnum, Greg Buckley, Matthew Varnum and John Varnum and his great niece and nephew, Claire Varnum and Aiden Varnum. He was predeceased by his sister Ann E. Varnum in 2012. He was born in Ware, son of the late Carl R. and Janet A. (Robinson) Varnum and grew up and lived 43 years in North Brookfield and then lived 9 years in Boylston before moving to Worcester. He was a 1959 graduate of North Brookfield High School and attended Yankton College in South Dakota.
Mr. Varnum worked for many years for the Jamesbury Corporation of Worcester and served as a part time police officer for the Town of North Brookfield for 21 years, the Town of Boylston for 9 years and then retired as a lieutenant from the Worcester County House of Correction in Worcester where he worked for 7 years.
He was a member of the George Whitefield United Methodist Church, the Massachusetts Central & Southern Police Associations and the Friends of the Boylston Library. Carl's real enjoyment was hiking and hunting the woods of New England and spending time with his family.
A Funeral Service for Carl will be held Monday, February 8, 2016 at 3:00 PM in the Varnum Funeral Home, Inc., 43 East Main St., West Brookfield. A calling hour will be held prior to the service from 2 to 3 PM in the funeral home. Burial will be in the spring in Walnut Grove Cemetery in North Brookfield.
