Catherine M. Salem, 93
North Brookfield - Catherine M. (Kelly) Salem, 93 of Gilbert St., died Sunday, December 7, 2014 at the Overlook Masonic Health Center.
She leaves four sons, Richard Salem and his wife Janet of Leicester, John Salem of Warren, David Salem of West Brookfield and Robert Salem of Gloucester; three daughters, Nancy Salem and her husband Alan Drake, Martha Leasca and her husband George and Heather Salem all of West Brookfield; six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Henry R. Salem in 2008 and a son, Arthur Salem in 1958. She was born in New Haven, CT daughter of the late Joseph P. and Hildur S. (Schwartz) Kelly and was raised in Springfield before moving to North Brookfield in the 1940's to teach school. She was a graduate of Cathedral High School in Springfield and Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee.
Mrs. Salem was very involved in education serving many terms on the town School Committee and several years as Chairwomen. She also was Chairwomen of the Building Committee for the North Brookfield Junior/Senior High School which was completed in 1956 and at that time was the first major building project for the Town of North Brookfield in many years. Catherine spent many years for the startup, development and continued success of the historic Salem Cross Inn in West Brookfield
She was a faithful member of St. Joseph's Church and was a world traveler.
A Funeral Mass for Catherine will be held Thursday, December 11, 2014 at 10:00 AM in the St. Joseph's Church in North Brookfield. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, December 10, 2014 from 4:30 to 6:30 PM in the Varnum Funeral Home, Inc., 43 East Main St., West Brookfield. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
