Warren - Derek K. Sousa, 21, passed away unexpectedly on February 18, 2016.
He leaves his father, Kevin Sousa of Warren; his mother, Wendy Fegreus-Fountain and her husband David of Ware; three brothers, Jeffrey Sousa of Brookfield, Dennis Sousa and his girlfriend Mandy Pion of Warren and Matthew Sousa of Douglas; his sister, Brianna Cryan and her husband Rob of Boca Raton, FL; one niece, one nephew and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was born in Ware, grew up in East Brookfield and Warren and graduated valedictorian of his class from Quaboag Regional High School in Warren in 2012.
Derek, an extraordinary academic, was continuing his education as a Biology major at the University of Virginia. With a desire for knowledge and exploration, he possessed an immense love for literature, accompanied by the same love for music, as well as nature. His passions led to hobbies such as reading, playing the guitar and drums, and exploring the outdoors. Derek's adoration of hockey at a young age led to an appreciation for exercise and physical activity. If he wasn't climbing a tree, casting a lure, or hiking through previously untraveled woodlands, he could be found riding a bicycle or going for a run about the streets. His free spirited, harmonious, and gentle nature encouraged and appreciated the company of his closest family and friends - everlasting relationships that were built on those very traits, relationships that will continue today and every day through great memories shared with him.
Calling hours for Derek will be held Friday, February 26, 2016 from 5 to 7 PM in the Varnum Funeral Home, Inc., 43 East Main St., West Brookfield.
