Dr. Donald C. Gay, D.V.M, 84
Fiskdale - Dr. Donald C. Gay, D.V.M., 84, of Fiskdale, died on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at his home with his loving family by his side.
He leaves his devoted wife of 62 years, Jacqueline Gay; three daughters, Donna Gay and her husband Richard Cruickshank, Karen Gaumond and her husband Andre and Martha Blodgett and her husband Kenneth; a sister, Sarah Blodgett and her husband Edson; six grandchildren, Bruce, Thomas, Benjamin, Rebecca, Andrew and Claudia; three great-grandchildren, Autumn, Zoey and Mitchell; as well as nieces and nephews, Gaye McInerney and her husband Thomas, Scott Blodgett, Joseph Gaucher, and Peter Black.
Dr. Gay was a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine who founded the Sturbridge Veterinary Hospital in Sturbridge 50 years ago. He operated the hospital for 36 years before retiring. He was known for his kindness, caring and compassion for people and their pets. He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and was an active long time member of the Federated Church of Sturbridge and Fiskdale, serving in many capacities there.
Growing up, he attended schools in Lexington, MA. He graduated from UMass Amherst, class of 1952. In 1958, he received his M.S. degree from Iowa State at Ames, IA and earned his D.V.M. degree from Cornell University in 1962.
He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War.
As hobbies, Dr. Gay enjoyed wood cutting, gardening, boating, photography, chess, reading and the natural beauty of the outdoors. But most of all, he treasured the times that he spent being with his family.
A Memorial Service for Dr. Gay will be held Saturday, July 11, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the Federated Church of Sturbridge and Fiskdale, 8 Maple Street, Sturbridge, MA 01566. There are no calling hours and burial will be held privately in North Cemetery. Varnum Funeral Home, Inc., 43 East Main St., West Brookfield is assisting his family with arrangements.
