Obituary

NORTH BROOKFIELD – Douglas W. Lavin, 75, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Quaboag Rehabilitation & Skilled Care Center following a brief illness. Doug is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Darlene (Dupell) Lavin; his two sons, Timothy Lavin and his wife, Carrie, of El Paso, TX, and Daniel Lavin and his wife, Christine, of East Brookfield; and his cherished grandchildren, Trevor and Madelyn Lavin of El Paso, TX. He also leaves two brothers, Jeff Lavin and his wife, JoAnne, of Hudson, and Don Lavin and his wife, Mary Jo, of North Brookfield, along with several beloved nieces and nephews.

Doug was born on May 21, 1951, in Worcester, the son of the late Warren D. Lavin and the late Lillian J. (Farr) Lavin. He was a graduate of North Brookfield High School and was a longtime resident of North Brookfield. Doug dedicated many years of service to the Town of North Brookfield as an employee of the Highway Department where he enjoyed driving trucks and plowing snow. He later became a field service technician where he enjoyed repairing various kinds of equipment before retiring.

Above all else, Doug was a devoted husband and father, but his greatest joy came from being called "Grampy." He loved woodworking and could often be found creating projects in "Grampy's Workshop." He found joy in collecting Matchbox cars, which he often gave as gifts. Doug also loved to travel, with one of his most memorable trips being to Italy with his wife. The time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, brought him his greatest happiness, and he will be remembered fondly by all who knew and loved him.

Calling hours are from 5-7pm on July 20, 2026, at Varnum Funeral Home, 43 East Main Street, West Brookfield, MA. A funeral service will be held on July 21, 2026, at 10am at Varnum Funeral Home followed by a burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in North Brookfield.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to everyone at Quaboag Rehabilitation & Skilled Care Center for the compassionate care Doug received and for treating him like family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Quaboag Rehabilitation & Skilled Care Center Activities Department, 47 E. Main Street, West Brookfield, MA 01585.
