Edward H. Spencer, Jr., 81

Brimfield - Edward H. Spencer, Jr., 81, died Tuesday, August 26, 2014 in Harrington Memorial Hospital after a 10 year battle fighting Multiple Myeloma.

He leaves his wife of 32 years, Barbara (Bennett) Spencer; two sons, Michael Spencer and his wife Ellen and Jeffrey Spencer and his wife Candy of West Brookfield; four daughters, Gail Spencer and Elizabeth Davidson and her husband William of Nantucket Island, Stacy Spencer of Hamden, CT and Kimberly Spencer of Houston, TX; ten grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  He was born in Springfield, son of the late Edward H. and Elizabeth (Perkins) Spencer and lived many years in Warren before moving to Brimfield in 1981.

Ed (Spence) joined his father in the car business at Edw. H. Spencer, Inc. in Warren, which he owned and operated for over 60 years, the last 35 with his two sons.  He loved the car business and enjoyed meeting and helping every customer he met and became friends with many of them.

He was passionate about sports and adored the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and golf. His last words with his sons were about the Red Sox winning a game.   He was involved in many youth sports in the Town of Warren and then in the Town of Brimfield where he was a member of the Brimfield Rec Committee.  He was instrumental in developing the girls basketball program and girls AAU team.  He coached softball, basketball, and was at almost every game that his six children played for basketball, baseball, field hockey, softball, soccer, and tennis.

He was a United States Marine Corps Veteran of the Korean War and had been active in the Lions Club of Warren and the Warren Fire Dept.  He initiated the building of a basketball court next to the fire station.

Spence was the driving force to get many of his family, friends, and employees to play golf.  When he couldn't play anymore he would ride in the cart and supervise. He loved animals, planning and hosting parties or golf tournaments, painting, pasta, ice cream, and anything chocolate.  He loved to travel with his family, especially to the island of Nantucket where he spent many summer weeks.

Funeral Services for Edward will be held privately and burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in West Brookfield.  Calling hours will be held Friday, September 5, 2014 from 5 to 7 PM in the Varnum Funeral Home, Inc., 43 East Main St., West Brookfield.
