Ellen M. (Sauvageau) Phaneuf, 83, of Gilbertville, died on Monday, January 29, 2024 at St. Vincent Hospital.
She leaves her son, John H. Phaneuf and his wife Jeanine; two daughters, Diane E. Phaneuf, and Debra Beland and her husband Kenneth Gray, as well as her grandchildren, Matthew and Kate Beland. She also leaves her sister, Vivian Stone, and her brothers, David, Harold, and Robert Sauvageau. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry J. Phaneuf in 2018. She was born in Spencer, daughter of the late Normand and Eleanor (Anderson) Sauvageau.
When she was younger, Ellen attended St. Mary's school in Spencer and went on to work at the former Klevin's Shoe Company. After marrying Henry, she devoted her time to raising her family. Later, she assisted Henry with their landscaping business where she ran equipment and took care of the billing and bookkeeping. In recent years, she enjoyed reading, puzzle making, and coloring.
Throughout her life, Ellen was known for her kindness and her contagious smile. She loved flowers, birds, and spending time in nature. She took great pride in her appearance and had a fondness for all things blue. Another one of her joys was watching her grandchildren grow up. She will be greatly missed.
At her request, burial in Mary Queen of the Rosary Cemetery will be held privately.
Varnum Funeral Home, Inc., 43 East Main St., in West Brookfield is assisting her family with arrangements.
