Warren – Gary C. Smith, MD, 83, of Warren, passed away on Monday, May 12, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family at home.
He leaves his wife of 37 years, Patricia M. Smith; his daughter, Gretel Smith and her husband, Paul Ewen, of Brooklyn, NY; his son, Drummond Smith and his wife, Carlie, of Wilton, CT; his son, Breton Smith of Cortland, NY; his daughter, Brittany Saibini and her husband, Josh, of Tuscaloosa, AL; his daughter, Rebecca Bowen and her husband, James, of St. Augustine, FL; his son, Charles Smith and his wife, Christina, of Granby, MA; his son, Matthew Smith and his wife, Rachel, of St. Augustine, FL; his son, William Smith and his wife Angela, of Palmer, MA; his son, Michael Smith of Belchertown, MA; his daughter, Margaret Mombrea and her husband, Noah, of Ransonville, NY; and his daughter, Lillian Smith of Warren, MA. Dr. Smith also leaves his 25 grandchildren; his brother, David Smith and his wife, Linda, of Batavia, NY; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Daniel Smith. He was born in Batavia, NY, son of the late Roland N. and Ethelyn (Nutting) Smith.
As a physician, Dr. Smith practiced both internal and geriatric medicine out of Batavia, NY. He was a conservationist, a talented musician, a horticulturalist, a runner, a golfer, and a coach to his children’s various sports. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, a kind and caring brother and uncle, and an incredible friend to many. He had a wonderful sense of humor and made learning fun for his children, offering them five cents for each great blue heron they could report seeing. He effectively made it his mission to get the most out of life and to enjoy all that he could, pouring his heart and soul into all that he did.
A Requiem Mass for Dr. Smith will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at 2:00pm in St. Paul Oratory, 1082 Main Street, Warren, MA 01083. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul Oratory, or to The Phi Kappa Tau Chapter at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY at
