Gene Befford

December 31, 1938 — March 6, 2025

Oakham – J. Gene Befford, 86, of Oakham, passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at his home in Oakham with his family by his side.

Gene is survived by his two sons, Michael Befford and his wife Jacqueline of East Brookfield, and Daniel Befford of Oakham. He will be remembered by his grandchildren, Mikayla and her husband Tyler Swalec of Holden, Abby Befford and her fiancé Léo Germiniani of Milford, Connecticut, Andrew Befford and his fiancé Meighan Keller of Holden, Matthew Befford, and Josslyn Befford of Oakham, along with many of his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in 2021 by his beloved wife of 57 years Frances (Mallon) Befford, along with his ten older siblings.

Gene was a private man, who greatly enjoyed time with his family, watching the Red Sox, Patriots and Golf Channel. He and Fran loved trips in the winter to Fort Myers Beach, Florida to walk along the beach and bask in the warm sunshine. Gene and Fran were always together for Friday nights at the American Legion, weekend trips to Maine, and day trips with no planned destination. Along with their trips, they enjoyed going to recitals and sports games for their grandchildren.

Gene proudly served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1963. After his service he worked many years at Warren Pumps as a systems controller until his retirement in 2000. He was a long standing member at the Knights of Columbus #2381 in North Brookfield, serving proudly as Grand Knight and on the scholarship committee. He was also a part of the American Legion in North Brookfield.
Gene will be remembered for his love of family, his dedication to service, his pride in watching his sons succeed, and the simple joys he found in life, from cheering on his grandchildren to spending cherished moments with Fran.

A Graveside service will be held for Gene and Frances at the Walnut Grove Cemetery in North Brookfield at the convenience of the family in the Spring. In Lieu of flowers, the family has asked for memorial donations to be made in Gene’s name to the Sawyer-Mathieu-Kerns American Legion post 41 in North Brookfield.

Varnum Funeral Home, 43 East Main Street, in West Brookfield, is assisting his family with arrangements.
