Miss Harriet E. W. Smith, 102
Ware - Miss Harriet Ellen Walker Smith passed over on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at the Quaboag Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center in West Brookfield at the age of 102.
Harriet was born on April 4, 1912, the second daughter to Arthur and Annie (Gabrielson) Smith of West Street in Ware, Massachusetts. Her older sister Clara and her younger sister Elizabeth, as well as her parents predeceased her. She leaves behind a number of loving step-nieces and nephews: Audley Child of Davenport, FL, Bev Baker of Jewett City, CT, Mary Alice Pollard of New Braintree, MA, Frances Surles of Crossville, TN, Charles Lowell of Hardwick, MA and Katie Tyler of New Braintree. She also leaves many friends, step-great nieces and nephews and step-great-great-nieces and nephews who cared deeply about her.
She graduated from Ware High School in 1930 and went on to nursing training in Boston. After completing her training and obtaining her RN, she applied to the United States Army but due to illness was unable to serve her Country. Harriet returned to Ware to take care of her ailing mother and was employed at Ware Savings Bank until she retired at the age of 62. She then moved to Attleboro and began a second career working at Balfour's until about the age of 70.
Harriet was an amazing woman with a positive attitude and a clear mind right up until almost the time of her passing. She loved to discuss politics and despite her blindness, enjoyed "reading" books on CD and listening to the television and radio in order to keep up with current events. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Miss Smith made a final gift of donating her body to the Harvard Medical School Anatomical Gift Program in Boston. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Varnum Funeral Home, Inc., 43 East Main St., West Brookfield is assisting the family with arrangements.
