Marilee J. Makovitch

November 29, 1948 — February 28, 2017

Marilee J. (Dunham) Makovitch, 68, passed away suddenly at home on Tuesday, February 28, 2017, ending a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Marilee was born on November 29, 1948 in Springfield, the only child of the late Walter and Ida (Dorman) Dunham.  She was raised in Ware.

Following graduation from Ware High School, Marilee married her husband of 49 years, Harry J. Makovitch, on October 14, 1967.  The couple resided for a short time in Barre before moving back to Ware.  Marilee worked for several years at the former Food Fair grocery store in Holden prior to becoming an employee of the Ware Public Schools, where she continued to work until her passing.  She loved her job, and she was an incredibly hard worker, even refusing to retire in the face of her difficult illness.

Marilee was the most selfless, generous woman imaginable.  Throughout her life, family and friends always came first.  She truly found joy in caring for others.  Whether it was running errands, preparing meals, babysitting, or lending a hand in any way possible, she was always there.  Not only would she readily volunteer, she would insist.  It was impossible to slow her down.

Marilee's family was the center of her universe.  Her husband was her closest companion, and her daughter, her very best friend.  Family vacations, especially those spent in Bar Harbor, Maine, and summer trips to the beach were among her favorite things.  She loved to travel and had many fond memories of impromptu road trips to destinations along the East Coast.

Marilee has now reunited with her beloved husband, Harry, whom she lost this past November.  She leaves behind one daughter, Beth (Makovitch) Stachowicz, of Ware, who couldn't have imagined a better mother.  She also leaves her loving son-in-law, Robert Stachowicz, and her two cherished grandchildren, Caden and Hallie Stachowicz.  Marilee's family members, though deeply saddened by her loss, feel beyond blessed to have been loved and cared for by such a purely genuine soul.  They take comfort knowing that she is finally free.

Calling hours and a Memorial Service for family and friends will be held in Marilee's honor at Charbonneau Funeral Home in Ware on Monday, March 13, 2017.  The calling hours will take place from 4-6 p.m., immediately followed by the Memorial Service at 6 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Marilee's name to the Baystate Regional Cancer Program at Mary Lane.
