Mildred L. Silverberg

January 7, 1922 — December 14, 2020

West Brookfield/Hardwick - Mildred L. "Millie" (Knox) Silverberg, 98, of Hardwick, died on Monday, December 14, 2020 at her daughter's home in Lexington, KY.   Millie's children are so thankful for the love, laughter and music that always filled their home.  She was known for her happy personality and ability to make everyone feel loved and special.

She leaves her son, Robert K. Silverberg and his wife Sandy of Collierville, TN; four daughters, Elsa Bates of Lodi, CA, Alison Messina of Lexington, KY, Heidi Jeldres of Hardwick, and Robin Dawson of Lexington, KY; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandson and a large extended family. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Arvid O. Silverberg.  It was the pride of her life to be a Gold Star Mother, having lost their son, WO Arvid O. Silverberg, Jr. who died saving lives in Vietnam.  Millie was the last of her generation of the Silverberg and Knox families, including her brothers, C. Joseph, Frederick, Albert, and Roy Knox, and two sisters, Ernestine Phipps, and Alice Sharp.  She was born in Milford, daughter of the late Clarence I. and Alice M. (Walker) Knox.

She and Arvid together built and lived in their home on Ragged Hill Road in West Brookfield for 50 years, which always served as a warm, welcoming respite for many in their community.

Millie was a long-time member of the George Whitefield United Methodist Church in West Brookfield, where she shared her love of music all her adult life and inspired her own children and her church family to always make time to sing.

A Memorial Service for Millie will be held in the Spring when all may gather to celebrate her beautiful life.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the George Whitefield United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 576, West Brookfield, MA 01585.

Varnum Funeral Home, Inc., 43 East Main Street in West Brookfield is assisting her family with arrangements.
