Obituary

Vincent J. McCaughey passed away on April 11, 2026 following a battle with pulmonary disease. He was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on March 15, 1948 to Vincent T. and Jean (Klepaczek) McCaughey, the youngest of three siblings. The family moved to Warren, Massachusetts in 1950, where he eventually settled with his own wife and children. They called Warren home until 2024 when he and his wife Jean moved to Paxton.

Vin graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Worcester, the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, and Suffolk University Law School, where he earned a JD in 1974. After completing his education, Vin returned to Warren to establish a law practice that continued until his retirement in 2024.

Vin was a proud and well-rounded general practitioner to clients in Central and Western Massachusetts. He served as Town Counsel to multiple towns, and represented people and small businesses on a wide range of legal matters. He and his mentor John Schlosstein shared office space for decades on E. Main Street in Warren. They and their support staff hosted mid-morning coffee and afternoon tea breaks most weekdays, often with guests from the community. During those years Vin served on the boards of Mary Lane Hospital, Bay State Health Systems, Country Bank, Quirk Wire Company and the Quaboag Valley Community Development Corporation. He was the president of the QVCDC for twenty years. Vin thoroughly enjoyed his work as an attorney and the opportunity it gave him to help people in his community. He never fully retired until illness and the move from Warren made it necessary. In semi-retirement, he still made time for regular golf dates and seasonal trips with his long-time golf group.

Vin was also active in community youth sports programs, particularly baseball, his own favorite sport which he played through high school. He coached baseball in Warren from Pee Wee through Babe Ruth over a 12-year period where he developed bonds with many boys in the community, and he continued to follow them in their high school playing days and beyond. Vin was an avid fan and supporter of Quaboag Regional High School’s baseball, soccer, and basketball teams, and rarely (if ever) missed a game in which his sons were playing.

His favorite times were those spent with his family, especially summers on Block Island, winters skiing in Vermont, and special family vacation trips to Florida, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. He also loved coaching and watching his sons in baseball, soccer, and basketball, on the field and in the backyard on Burbank Ave, as well as skiing, golfing or fishing with them over the years. Recently he has been a fan on the sidelines of the various sports his four grandchildren participate in, and saying, “It’s like doing it all over again.” In retirement, Vin and Jean also spent a great deal of time travelling to destinations in the US, the Caribbean, Europe and on a wonderful cruise through French Polynesia.

Vin is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jean (Thomason), son Daniel, his wife Nicole Bonneau and their children Maren and Colin, son Steven, his wife Danielle and their children Thea and Luke, his brother Tom and his wife Linda, and Jean’s siblings Alice, Bob, and Philip Thomason. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Gail Hipkins.

Calling hours for Vincent will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, followed by a funeral home service from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM at Varnum Funeral Home, 43 East Main Street, West Brookfield, MA 01585. In lieu of flowers contributions in Vin’s memory can be made to the Quaboag Valley Community Development Corporation, 23 West Main Street, Ware, MA 01082.
