Weikko I. Nahkala, Jr., 63
West Yarmouth - Weikko I. Nahkala, Jr., 63, formerly of East Brookfield, died Wednesday, June 10, 2015 in Miriam Hospital in Providence, RI.
He leaves his mother, Helen Nahkala of West Yarmouth; five brothers, Raymond Nahkala of Oakham, Donald Nahkala of Warren, George Van Deusen of Dudley, Richard Nahkala of West Yarmouth and Norman Nahkala of Hemel Hempstead, England; three sisters, Joan Barber of Greensboro Bend, VT, Lily Davis of Shermans Dale, PA and Helen Chaplin of North Brookfield; his partner of many years, Ralph Arnold of Newport, RI and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Ware son of the late Weikko I. Nahkala and lived in East & North Brookfield and West Yarmouth before moving to Newport.
He attended and graduated from South High School in Worcester and then graduated from the Salvation Army School for Officers Training in New York and served as a Core Officer for 10 years. Mr. Nahkala worked as a Bakery Technician for Lincoln Food Group for over 20 years.
Weikko was loved and respected as a son, brother, uncle, great uncle, cousin and friend. He gave generously of all he had, enjoyed life, his job and all the people he met as he traveled through life.
Mr. Nahkala was a member of the East Brookfield Baptist Church until he moved to Newport and joined the United Baptist Church. His faith played a very important role in his life.
A Funeral Service for Weikko will be held Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 11:00 AM in the Varnum Funeral Home, Inc., 43 East Main St., West Brookfield. There are no calling hours. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Oakham. A Collation will be held following the burial at the Oakham Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 330 Congress St., 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02210 or to the United Baptist Church, 30 Spring St., Newport, RI 02840.
