WARE – William Owen Grushey, beloved husband, father, brother, veteran, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, strength and unwavering devotion to his family.

William, “Buddy,” was the son of the late William George Grushey and Sophia M. (Krenzolak) Grushey.  Born and raised in Ware, he graduated from Ware High School before proudly enlisting in the United States Navy. He served aboard the USS Forrestal until his honorable discharge in 1962.  William was the cherished husband of Barbara Ann (Dunbar) Grushey and the heart of the family they built together. Their 52-year marriage was one of enduring love, mutual respect, and countless treasured memories until Barbara’s passing in 2021.  Following his military service, William began a distinguished career in law enforcement. He served as a police officer with the Ware Police Department before attending Springfield Technical Community College.  He later joined the Metropolitan District Commission and ultimately served as a Massachusetts State Trooper with the Massachusetts State Police. Whether serving his community or caring for his family, William was known for his integrity, courage, and steadfast commitment to helping others.  In retirement, William embraced his lifelong love of the outdoors. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he and Barbara treasured their vacations in Maine. His greatest joy, however, was tending the lush garden of colorful flowers at their summer home in Dennisport on Cape Cod.

William will be deeply missed by his three sons: James Christopher Grushey of Ware; Jarret Jay Grushey and LeighAnn of Ware; and Justin Parker Grushey and his wife, Rachel, of Hyannis. As “Grampy,” he will be lovingly remembered by his five grandchildren: Brooke, Cam, Paige, Quinn and Deacon.  He is also survived by his two sisters, Heather Grigas of Belchertown and Gwen Mitus of Gilbertville. His memory will be cherished by his brother-in-law, Donald Dunbar and his wife, Maryann, along with his many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

William’s kindness, quiet strength, and unwavering dedication to his family and community will be remembered always. His life was defined by service, compassion, and a deep appreciation for the people and places he loved.

A memorial service and burial are currently being planned. Details will be announced and shared with family and friends in the near future.
