Dr. Samuel P. Sawyer, 95

Warren - Dr. Samuel P. Sawyer, 95, of Coy Hill Rd., died peacefully on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 in the Soldiers Home in Holyoke.

 

He leaves his wife of 44 years, Beverly J. (Wasser) Sawyer; four daughters, Helen Hawley and her husband Randall, Carol Sawyer, Mary Bowe and her husband Mike and Sarah Randall and her husband Elliot; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his three brothers, Kendrick, Norman and Donald.  He was born and grew up in Cornish, Maine, son of the late Dr. Samuel G. and Helen (Pierce) Sawyer and lived 14 years in Wilbraham before moving to Warren in 1986.  He was a graduate of Bates College and Tufts Dental School.

 

Dr. Sawyer practiced Dentistry in Springfield and Longmeadow until retiring to Warren. Shortly after moving there, he reopened his practice in his home to help the people of Warren and the surrounding towns before retiring in 2013 at the age of 92.

 

Sam was an electrical engineer before serving in W.W. II as an Army Combat Engineer, where he helped build bridges and roads across Europe.

 

Samuel was a member of the Wilbraham United Church, the Samuel Osgood Lodge of Masons, the Wilbraham Lodge of Masons, and the Quaboag Lodge of Masons and was a member of the Melha Shriners for 50 years.  He was a member of the Warren Lions Club, the Adams-Coney-Frew Post 244 American Legion in West Brookfield, the Rotary Club of the Brookfields, the Wilbraham Rotary Club and the Valley District Dental Association.  He served on the Warren Finance Committee, the Housing Authority, and was on the School Committee for 9 years.  In 2005, Samuel was recognized as Citizen of the Year in Warren for all the work and time that he had donated to the town.

 

A special thanks goes out to the "Outstanding" staff at the Holyoke Soldiers Home for the loving care they provided Sam during his last months.

 

A Celebration of Life Service for Samuel will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the Wilbraham United Church, 500 Main St. in Wilbraham.  There are no calling hours.  Varnum Funeral Home, Inc., 43 East Main St., West Brookfield is assisting his family with arrangements.
