Brookfield - Madelyn C. “Maddie” (Rice) Swanson, 78, of Brookfield, died on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at Baystate Medical Center.
She leaves five children, Lucinda Jansen, Arthur D. Swanson and his wife Carol, Marlene A. Giguere and her husband Kevin, Craig M. Swanson and Ashlee M. Bowes; seven grandchildren, Alycia, Delaney, Krista, Monica, Lesley, Rachel, and Colton, a great-grandson, Tucker, and a great-granddaughter, Cathy-Jo Madelyn Grubbs. She also leaves behind her very special friend, Barbara Wilson, and many other friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Arthur H. Swanson in 2019, as well as her brother, Walter Rice. She was born in Worcester, daughter of the late Walter H. and Margaret M. (Norris) Rice.
Maddie worked at the former L. Farber Leather Company in Worcester for over 20 years. She also worked as a bookkeeper at the former Rice & Gadaire Lumber Co. in Brookfield, and most recently, as a Loan Officer at the Worcester and Webster First Credit Unions.
She was very well known in Brookfield. Maddie served on the Cultural Council for several years, and could always be seen working on or participating in their annual events. She was one of the original Committee Members for the Apple Country Fair, and made award winning apple pies. As Maddie’s Country Art, she enjoyed painting on wooden projects that her husband Art would craft, and attended local Fairs.
Family and her faith were both cherished parts of her life. She loved her family of children, grandchildren, a great-grandson, and even a great-great granddaughter. She was a long-time member of St. Mary’s Church in Brookfield.
Calling hours for Maddie will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2021 from 9 to 11AM in the Varnum Funeral Home, Inc., 43 East Main St., in West Brookfield. A Graveside Service will be held the same day at 1PM in St. John Cemetery, 260 Cambridge St., in Worcester. Masks must be worn and social distancing guidelines must be followed while in the funeral home and the cemetery.
